Today is a big day in the long life of the Land Rover Defender because it’s the last one. Production stops today so those of you who live where you can’t buy a new one now really can’t buy a new one. Ever.

Have what you can’t have.

Well, there should be enough of them in this world to pass down to future generations. Probably more durable (and appreciated) long term than most other cars produced the last 20 years.

I never managed to get a 130 pickup :(

Not that I would have bought a new car, but I’d like to think that somewhere down the line the option was there, just in case I make a few extra quid.

I never understood Europes obsession with the Mustang. Then I went to Germany for a few weeks for work, and after seeing the Defeneders around town that we cant get in the US, I 100% understand their obsession with the Mustang.

Doubl cab 130 pickup will always be the one to own

Tata said last year they will build them in India. I’d imagine they will just ship all the tooling out and set up shop (like the Chinese did with MG Rover) and continue. With grey-imports being allowed to the U.K. And Europe.

But the difference is that we don’t have to wait 25 long years to import a car that’s not sold in our market.

Yeah what is the rule for Europe? Since emissions are stricter in the US I’m sure that won’t be a problem. How much easier is it for Europe to import a US car than US to import a Europe car?

Wait and see, I expect.

Truth be told the LR hasn’t sold very well for years and buyers who have an actual use for a tough, reliable vehicle look elsewhere..

There’s no EU wide rule that I know of. If you import a vehicle it’ll usually have to comply with at least basic construction and use regs (which means orange indicators and white side/parking lights for American cars). Some places require rear fog lights too. After that, there’s often the matter of taxation. Here in Ireland we have a Vehicle Registration Tax which is CO2 based and if you want to import a car without an official EU CO2 figure you’ll be paying the maximum rate which means no more exotic Japanese imports.

What Ce He Sin said. Germany requires rear fog lights and amber turn signals. Sometimes different windscreens too. Emissions test has to be passed. That’s it afaik. Nothing should be a problem as long as you have the money. And tüv inspection is a must.

Wish the US was not so stubborn and actually learned from Europe instead of just doing things the Murican way

You can thank Mercedes Benz for that. They lobbied in the 80s in order to prevent people from imorting cheaper Euro spec cars. That’s some backwards shit as safety and emission standards are pretty similar.

Yep, frickin hate it. The US also ruins cars with their stupid bumper safety specs per example

Ugh my eyes. At least it’s not as bad as it used to be.

Kinja'd!!!

Also, whose idea was it that sealed beams were mandatory? (That’s what a us spec Pug 205 would have probably looked like btw)

The Pumas are going to be INSANELY expensive when we can import them... in 2032.

Sad day for sure. Always loved Defenders, one of my favorite places to drive by in B’ham, AL when I lived there:

The idea was that having to fit the same size of sealed beam to everything meant that if your light bulb failed you could go into any filling station shop, buy a cheap and standard entire new light and fit it. As opposed to buying a rather cheaper and standard-ish bulb.

Didn’t know that. But it sounds kinda wasteful to me.
